What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, sometimes referred to as meso or mesothelioma cancer, is a rare form of cancer that attacks the smooth lining of the chest, lungs, heart and abdomen. The layer of tissue surrounding these organs is made up of mesothelial cells, which is where mesothelioma gets its name. Exposure to asbestos accounts for up to 80% of mesothelioma cases.

Typical Symptoms Include:

Frequently Asked Questions

1What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, sometimes referred to as meso or mesothelioma cancer, is a rare form of cancer that attacks the smooth lining of the chest, lungs, heart and abdomen. The layer of tissue surrounding these organs is made up of mesothelial cells, which is where mesothelioma gets its name. The single cause of this devastating disease is exposure to asbestos.

Unfortunately, there are very few treatment options, and most people diagnosed with mesothelioma do not survive. In fact, mesothelioma kills more than 2,500 Americans every year.

And while asbestos use has greatly declined in recent decades, this kind of cancer can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure to appear, meaning thousands of people are still diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.

2Who should file a mesothelioma claim?
The dangers and toxicity of asbestos were well-known in the 1930s, yet asbestos companies continued using it extensively through much of the 20th century. Many of these same asbestos companies lobbied successfully to overturn EPA rules in the 1980s that banned the importation and use of asbestos.  As a result, to this day, shockingly to most, asbestos is not banned in the United States as it is in just about every other first-world country.  Asbestos companies willingly put profits ahead of the health and well-being of workers, their families, and the public.  But instead of owning up to their responsibility for sickening and killing hundreds of thousands of hard working men, women, and their innocent families, these very same companies and their insurers now spend millions trying to change laws to make it more difficult for working folks to file a lawsuit, to limit what people can recover for pain and suffering, and to buy the most crooked scientists they can find to peddle “doubt science” in an attempt to rewrite decades of settled medical and scientific opinions.  That’s why you need an experienced and aggressive asbestos lawyer that knows how to hold asbestos companies and their insurers responsible.
3Why should I file a mesothelioma claim?
There are hundreds of companies that used asbestos, knowingly exposing their employees to the harmful effects caused by it. While they have since stopped using asbestos, the majority of these companies are still in business. Solvent companies can be held liable by filing lawsuits for their negligence. Companies who have since restructured through the bankruptcy process have set up trusts specifically for those who have incurred the long-term effects of asbestos exposure, and compensation can be recovered by filing a claim.
4How much can I recover for a mesothelioma claim?

Patients harmed by asbestos and diagnosed with mesothelioma may be entitled to recover damages to compensate for losses such as past medical bills and lost wages due to time missed from work, a potentially reduced earning capacity in the future, and the cost of anticipated medical needs.

Additionally, based on legal precedent, an attorney could determine a reasonable value for non-economic losses such as emotional anguish, pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life.

In one case, a Navy veteran received a settlement of over $10 million.
